Buying a pre-loved Chanel bag is an investment. Whether you are hunting for a vintage Classic Flap or a modern Boy Bag, knowing the history of your item is essential. One of the first questions we get at Legitique is: "When was this bag made?"
While Chanel does not stamp a literal date on their bags (unlike Hermès), they have used a coded system of serial numbers since the mid-1980s.
In this guide, we will help you decode these numbers, understand the massive 2021 shift to microchips, and explain why a date code alone isn't enough to guarantee authenticity. We have also made complete guides, how to authenticate Chanel bags & 7 Steps to Authenticate a Chanel Boy Bag

1. The New Era: Metal Microchips (2021 – Present)
Before you hunt for a sticker, check if your bag is from the "New Era."
In April 2021, Chanel revolutionized their authentication system. They began phasing out the traditional hologram stickers and the black plastic authenticity cards. These have been replaced by a metal plaque with an embedded microchip (NFC).
What to look for:
-
The Plaque: A small, rectangular metal plate attached to the interior lining of the bag.
-
The Code: An alphanumeric code (a random mix of letters and numbers) engraved on the plate. Unlike the old system, this code does not tell you the year of manufacture directly; it is simply a unique ID for the bag.
- No Card: If your bag has this metal plate, it should not have a black authenticity card.
Legitique Tip: We are seeing "Super Fakes" that mimic this metal plate. Just because a bag has a chip does not mean it is authentic. The font, engraving quality, and placement are critical.
2. Chanel Serial Number Chart (The Sticker Era)
If your bag was made between 1986 and early 2021, it should feature a white sticker with a serial number. Chanel increased the number of digits over time.
Use the charts below to match the first 1 or 2 digits of your code to the production year.
The 8-Digit Series (2005 – 2021)
Characteristics: White sticker, clear tape with gold sparkles/speckles, dark vertical line on the left side, 'CHANEL' printed vertically.

The 7-Digit Series (1986 – 2005)
Characteristics: Older vintage stickers. Early series (0-2) are plain white. Series 3-5 have repeating Chanel logos. The authenticity cards from this era often do not feature the "circle" symbol on the top right.
3. Where to Find the Chanel Date Code
Chanel hides these stickers well. Depending on the model (Classic Flap, Boy, 19, or WOC), check these locations:
-
Bottom Corners: Directly on the lining.
-
Leather Tab: A small leather tag sewn into the lining or inside a zippered pocket.
-
Inside Pocket: Often deep inside the interior patch pocket.
4. "Help! My Bag Has No Sticker"
If you cannot find a sticker or a metal plate, don't panic immediately. There are two common reasons for this:
-
It is Pre-1986: Chanel did not use serial numbers before 1986. If you have a true vintage piece, it relies solely on the stamp logo and hardware for authentication.
-
Wear and Tear: Stickers are made of paper and glue. Over 20 or 30 years, they can dry out and fall off. You might see a small square of glue residue left behind. This is common in vintage bags (Series 0-3).
5. Why a Serial Number Does NOT Guarantee Authenticity
This is the most important part of this guide. A valid number does not mean a valid bag.
Counterfeiters have access to these charts too. They can print a sticker that says "30123456" which correctly corresponds to a 2020 bag. Real authentication requires analyzing:

-
The Typography: The specific shape of the numbers (e.g., the '0' usually has a strikethrough in later series, the '1' has serifs/feet).
-
The UV Reaction: Authentic stickers react specifically under blacklight.
-
The Hardware: The engraving on zippers and plates.
If the price is too good to be true, or the sticker looks "too perfect" for a vintage bag, proceed with caution.
