Coach Serial Number Checker
Enter your Coach creed serial number
Type the serial as it appears on the creed patch, with or without "No." and the dash. Results update automatically as you type.
Does the code fit the item?
Compare the decoded code with the item's visible details. A match supports consistency, but it does not authenticate the item.
What is a Coach serial number?
Most Coach leather bags carry a creed patch: a stamped leather square with a short paragraph about the brand and a serial number at the bottom. Since 1994 that number has combined a date code with the bag's style number, so it can tell you when the bag was made and which model it is.
Bags from before 1994 use plain running numbers that carry no date or style information. Between roughly 2014 and 2016 many creeds were left blank, with the style number moved to a small white fabric tag inside a seam or pocket.
How to use this Coach serial number checker
Type the serial exactly as it appears. The checker reads the month letter, the year digits and the plant code before the dash, and the style number after it. Where references disagree, such as single-digit years from 2000 to 2003, the result says so.
Then search the style number in sold listings to confirm the model. If the serial is missing, unreadable or inconsistent with the bag, a professional Coach authentication is the safer next step. For other brands, start with the designer serial number checker hub.
What does a Coach serial number result mean?
A Recognized format means the serial fits one of the documented Coach layouts and decodes to a real month and year. An Unusual month letter means the first letter is not one Coach uses for a month, such as I. A Recognized pre-1994 format means the number is an old running serial that holds no date.
None of these results means authentic or fake. Counterfeiters copy creeds from real bags, so a correct serial on the wrong shape, leather or hardware is still a red flag.
Coach creed month letters
The first letter of a post-1994 serial is the month. Coach runs from A to M and skips the letter I, which is easily mistaken for the number 1.
| Letter | Month | Letter | Month |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | January | G | July |
| B | February | H | August |
| C | March | J | September |
| D | April | K | October |
| E | May | L | November |
| F | June | M | December |
Coach serial number formats by era
| Era | Typical format | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Before 1994 | Digits only, e.g. 123-4567 | A running serial. No date, plant or style information. |
| 1994 – early 2000s | Letter, one digit, letter, dash, style: K8P-9870 | Month letter, last digit of the year, plant letter, style number. K8P-9870 is October 1998, style 9870. |
| From 2004 | Letter, two digits, letter, dash, style | Month letter, two-digit year, plant letter, style number. |
| Mid-2000s onwards | Letter, four digits, dash, style: B1980-38124 | Month letter, two-digit year, two-digit plant code, style number. B1980-38124 is February 2019, style 38124. |
| About 2014 – 2016 | Blank creed | The style number moved to a small white fabric tag inside a seam or pocket. |
An F at the start of the style number marks a bag made for Coach Outlet. Plant codes are not publicly mapped, so the checker shows them without naming a factory.
Where to find the serial number on a Coach bag
On most Coach bags the serial is stamped at the bottom of the creed patch, a leather square stitched inside the main compartment. Wristlets and small pieces may have no creed at all.
If the creed is blank, look for a small white fabric tag sewn into a seam or inside a zip pocket. Bags from roughly 2014 to 2016 often carry the style number there instead.

What if the creed is blank or there is no serial?
A blank creed or missing serial does not automatically mean a Coach bag is fake. Many bags from around 2014 to 2016 have blank creeds, limited runway pieces can be blank, and small accessories and wristlets often have no creed at all. Some 1941 Collection pieces abbreviate the creed and carry the style number on a separate white tag.
Pre-1994 bags have serials that cannot be decoded at all. For those, the creed wording, the layout of the patch and the construction are what date the bag.
Why a Coach serial number can still be misleading
Counterfeit Coach bags often carry a creed copied from a genuine listing, sometimes with a real style number from a completely different model. A serial that decodes cleanly only proves the format is plausible.
Check that the style number belongs to the model in front of you, then compare the creed wording, stitching, leather and hardware with a confirmed example. Legitique reviews those signals together.
What to do after checking your Coach serial
Search the style number in sold listings and compare the model, size and material. If anything conflicts, check for a misread character before drawing conclusions: the creed font makes 1, 7 and I easy to confuse.
Before buying, selling or filing a dispute, get a professional Coach authentication with photos of the full bag, the creed, the hardware, stitching, corners and interior.
When to order a professional Coach authentication
Order an authentication when the bag is vintage or high-value, the seller is unknown, the creed is blank or unreadable, or you plan to use the result for a marketplace claim, chargeback or resale listing.
See how it works and what the Certificate of Authenticity includes.
Is a Coach Outlet bag fake?
No. Bags made for Coach Outlet are genuine Coach products and carry an F in the style number. They are a different product line from the full-price boutique range, which matters for pricing and resale but not for authenticity.

Coach serial number checker questions
Answers to the questions that come up most often when checking a Coach creed serial.
How do I read a Coach serial number?
On bags from 1994 onwards, the first letter is the month, the next digit or digits are the year, then comes a plant code, and the part after the dash is the style number. K8P-9870 is October 1998, plant P, style 9870.
Why does Coach skip the letter I?
Coach runs its month letters from A to M and leaves out I, which is easily confused with the number 1. J is September, K October, L November and M December.
Can I date a Coach bag from before 1994?
Not from the serial. Pre-1994 serials are running numbers with no date or style information. The creed wording, the layout of the patch and construction details are used instead.
What does an F in the style number mean?
An F at the start of the style number marks a bag made for Coach Outlet. Outlet bags are genuine Coach, but a different line from full-price boutique bags.
My Coach creed is blank. Is it fake?
Not necessarily. Many bags from roughly 2014 to 2016 have blank creeds, with the style number on a small white fabric tag inside a seam or pocket. Some runway and collection pieces are also blank.
What does the plant code tell me?
It identifies the production plant, but Coach does not publish a key. The checker shows the code without naming a factory.
Can I look up a Coach serial number with Coach?
Coach has no public serial lookup. Search the style number in sold listings to confirm which model it belongs to, then compare the bag with confirmed examples.
Does a valid Coach serial prove the bag is authentic?
No. Creed patches are among the most copied details on fake Coach bags. The leather, stitching, hardware and creed wording matter more than the number.
