How I authenticate Hermès bags, leather goods and accessories

I check every Hermès piece by hand, from photos you upload. The blind stamp, the heat stamp, the stitching and the hardware all have to tell the same story before I give a verdict. Here's what I look at first.

  1. Step 1

    Hermès heat stamp

    Inside the bag or under the strap, the stamp should read "HERMÈS PARIS MADE IN FRANCE" with even spacing and a clean, shallow press. I check the font, the accent on the È and how the stamp sits in the leather. Thick, blurry or crooked lettering is a red flag.

  2. Step 2

    Blind stamp and year letter

    Hermès stamps a year letter, sometimes inside a shape, plus craftsman details. I check that the letter and shape fit the leather, hardware and model for that era. Want to decode yours first? Try the free Hermès blind stamp checker.

  3. Step 3

    Saddle stitching

    Genuine Hermès bags are hand-stitched with a saddle stitch, so the stitches sit at a slight, consistent angle with even tension. Machine-perfect straight stitching, loose threads or uneven spacing along the handles and edges are classic replica signs.

  4. Step 4

    Hardware and leather

    Locks, keys, clochettes and feet should be cleanly engraved "HERMÈS" and feel heavy and solid. I also compare the leather grain with the claimed type, such as Togo, Epsom or Clemence, and check edge paint and corners.
